Many European countries have much stricter gun control laws than those in the U.S.. It’s important to understand the lay of the land locally before you go.
Spain has strict laws regarding the possession and use of firearms, and it can be difficult for non-residents to bring guns into the country.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Interior, non-residents can bring firearms into Spain temporarily, as long as they have a valid firearm permit from their country of residence, and the firearms are for hunting or sport shooting. But certain types of firearms, such as automatic weapons and certain high-powered rifles, are prohibited.
When entering Spain with firearms, you’ll need to declare them to Customs and provide the necessary documentation, including:
- A copy of your valid firearm permit
- A copy of the firearm registration documents, which should include the make, model, and serial number
- A certificate of insurance for the firearm, which should be in English or Spanish and include coverage for accidental damage and theft
- A letter of invitation from the hunting or sport shooting organization you’ll be visiting in Spain
- A copy of your flight itinerary and hotel reservation
It’s also important to note that firearms must be transported in a locked case and stored in a secure location while in Spain.
