Can I Bring my Pets to Costa Rica?

Janice S. Says:

Does Costa Rica allow you to bring your pets?

IL Costa Rica Correspondent Bekah Bottone Says:

Hi Janice,

Costa Rica is a very pet-friendly country, and you can absolutely bring your pets with you when you move.

Bringing your pets to Costa Rica is easier than to many other countries because there is no quarantine. Your pets come off the plane and are immediately in your hands.

That said, you do have to take care of a few things before you leave. Go to your vet for a clean bill of health within two weeks of your departure date. And make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations for rabies and some other common diseases. You probably already have most if not all these shots.

Your vet should give you a health certificate indicating your pet is healthy and has all their shots. Then you get it endorsed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a nominal fee. Just send (or bring in person) a copy of the vet’s health certificate to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office in your region. Your vet may be able to submit the certificate to the USDA for you—just make sure they fill out your correct return address so you have the approved document back in time for your departure.

Once you have the USDA sign off, you’re set. No need to contact the Costa Rican consulate. Just make sure you have four copies of each document just in case any official wants a copy during your trip.

Certain airlines will allow dogs and cats to go in the cabin with you if they can fit in a carrier under the seat, but be sure to let the airline know beforehand. Larger breeds will have to go with the checked bags in a non-collapsible kennel with food and water.

It’s important to note that every airline will have different rules, and fees, for taking your pets with you to Costa Rica. Be sure to check with your airline before you travel. Additionally, there are certain times of the year that airlines won’t accept pets in cargo hold because of the too cold or too hot weather conditions.

You can get more detailed information about moving to Costa Rica with your pets in Chapter 8 of our Escape to Costa Rica guidebook, available on the IL Bookstore.
