If you come to Portugal as a visitor, you can drive with your U.S. or Canadian driver’s license for up to six months.
But if you plan to settle full-time, you will need to apply for a Portuguese license.
Happily, the process of getting one is easier in Portugal than many other European countries.
Countries such as Spain, France, and Italy require both practical and written tests be taken in the local language. In Portugal, you need only take a theory test, and this can be done in English.
Foreigners have 90 days from the date on their residence documents to apply for a Portuguese driver’s license. After 90 days, you’re no longer allowed to drive in Portugal but still have up to two years to make the exchange. Pass the two-year mark and you’ll be required to take the written and practical exam in Portuguese.
