Per SH I plan to initially bank in the US. Am I then able to pay rent deposit and monthly rent with Visa or a wad of cash? Same for utilities et al.?

You don’t say who you are renting from, but it is highly unlikely you can pay with a credit or debit card. You’ll need cash for that. That’s why we switched to Capital One — no foreign transaction fees, making our ATM withdrawals basically free. We also pay our utility bills with cash. The only thing direct debited from our credit card is DirecTV and we’ll probably get rid of that as we rarely watch it. Too much programming available via the internet these days….

Same for us regarding the rent, Mark. We also have a savings account with a cooperativa (credit union, sort of) from which all our utility bills are automatically deducted. Standing is line at multiple places to pay in cash is a pain!

We have no lines in Cotacachi…. 🙂
