I was thinking of bringing $1,000 in one and five dollar bills to Cuenca (via Quito) on our flight tomorrow, because I heard twenties create difficulty with change. Three questions:

    1) is their a problem with 20 dollar bills?

    2) Do the ATMs in Cuenca dispense $20 bills?

    3) Am I asking for trouble from EC or US Customs by carrying that amount of cash in international travel?

    Thank you so much!

It’s my understanding that you can bring in up to $9,999.00 without any problem. $10’s,$5’s and $1’s usually work better anywhere in Ecuador. Although $20’s shouldn’t be a problem in the larger cities

$1,000 in cash is not a problem, and 10s and 20s won’t be, either, except in taxis and some small vendors. The ATMS dispense 10s and 20s.
