Have not seen anything ANYWHERE re wills in Ecuador and what happens upon death. How does a U.S. citizen with Ecuadorian resident status handle estate planning and wills? If all property is in Ecuador, is a U.S. will needed and would probate be required there? Is a will in Ecuador also needed, and would this take precedence over a U.S. will? Also are certificates of death issued that would be sufficient for heirs on a life insurance policy in the U.S.?

A properly prepared will in Ecuador can be accepted in the U.S. However you should know, that, the real estate goes to surviving children and not to a spouse. I am uncertain about death certificates. You may want to address these and any other legal questions you have to an Ecuadorian attorney. Not a subject most of us like to think about, but we should all have a plan in case anything should happen to us…
