    From what I read, having insurance isn’t really necessary? If a problem emerges, can you just go to a hospital or doctor at a much lesser rate than here in the States without needing insurance?

    Melanie, many expats choose the pay-as-you-go plan. Office visits are $25-30, drugs and procedures cost much less than the US. Whether or not to have insurance depends on your health and your tolerance for risk in case of a catastrophic illness or injury.
