I am a 51 year old single man who would like to relocate to Ecuador. I have 30 years of computer experience. My specialty is the integration of computers into the small business environment. In Phoenix, AZ the my clients range from those with one computer in the home office to the small business with multiple servers and up to 50 users. I am sure there is a need for someone with my skills in Ecuador but will I experience difficulties setting up my “practice” there (after learning the Spanish language)? How do the locals treat Expats who open businesses there?

I have other computer related business ideas and would like to know if I would be welcome to compete with the locals. Another option is to create coworking space for locals and Expats alike but cater more to Expats and tourists.

I appreciate any feedback and insights.

    Thank you.

Hi John, this s a tough one to answer. You probably need to speak to a business facilitator. You might start at http://www.ecuachamber.com, ww.eaccusa.org, or http://www.lacamara.org. I’m pretty sure there are already computer connectivity specialists here, so you’ll need to look for a special niche to fill. And if you don’t speak Spanish you’ll be at a disadvantage until you are able to do so.

You’ll probably find more opportunities in the larger cities, of course, and the competition will be more welcome there. Remember that the minimum wage in Ecuador is very low, so your prices will need to be very competitive.

Maybe someone else on this forum has some suggestions or comments…
