Did you know that there are times in Panama when you can’t buy liquor…anywhere? Don’t worry, it’s nothing like the premise for the 1984 film Footloose. But on days that are considered sacred or of special importance, the government suspends the sale of alcohol at shops, supermarkets, restaurants, etc. (One can have a drink in the privacy of a home without any problem).
The so-called Ley Seca or Dry Law kicks in this May 4 for the presidential elections (held every five years). From noon on Saturday till noon on Sunday, you won’t be able to buy spirits anywhere. Other “Ley Seca” days include Good Friday (date changes every year as per the Catholic calendar) and January 9, Martyr’s Day.
