My husband and I have been considering moving to Ecuador for our retirement in 4 years.  The only thing keeping us back is the threat of malaria.  Do you have to take drugs the rest of your life ?  Any input would be helpful.

This is a very good question, I also wonder about what people do that live in the lower elevation  coastal regions, for yellow fever or dengue fever as well.  Is there any issues with mosquito born diseases in these areas.  Is DEET readily available or can some one comment about their experiences.

Also, it would be great if this forum had a search function, as this may have been covered already but going thorough all of the posts to find it is kind of time consuming.  Just a thought.

Malaria has been eradicated in Ecuador — no need for anything to combat it. You can get the vaccine for Yellow Fever if you like. As of yet, there is no vaccine for dengue. It’s best to use repellant as screens on windows, etc.
