    Where is the best place in Ecuador to barter prices on panama hats?

    Two places: Cuenca and Montecristi, just outside Manta. Panama hats are made in both these cities.

    Let us know how you fare. They run the gamut in price from $20 or so to thousands, depending on quality. Lost on me, but my husband loves hats, so we often spend lots of time admiring the handiwork. 🙂

    Hi Suzan, We had a full schedule (real estate and export shopping) and never got to any of the Panama hat places, but did talk to several knowable people to learn the way to spot quality. I may try to use one of my contacts there to do some shopping for me later! We’re back in the US now.

    Hope they told you that the quality is mostly dependent on the fineness of the fibers, much like thread count in sheets.
