If one wants to be free from taxis and buses, just to do some unplanned exploring and sightseeing. I see that most major car rental companies have offices in the major centers. But what about rentals of mopeds or motor scooters, are they available in the smaller centers? and are there any restrictions when it comes to helmets and operators permits. Will they accept a Canadian or American automobile drivers licence to rent one?
Are there any other ways to get around on your own?

I have seen scooters and bicycles for rent in the tourist town of Banos, but nowhere else. You can use your present drivers license.
