We enjoy river rafting on the Colorado River and are wondering if there is any similar activity there in Ecuador. We have an inflatable “rubber ducky” 2-person boat which handles Class II rapids—just enough to get the adrenaline going without being terrifying. Is this sport done in Ecuador? If so, we’d try to bring our boat. Ummm, not the Amazon with its alligator/crocodiles and piranhas, but are there other rivers that people raft? The “Chone” river is near our place. Thanks!

Yes, rafting is a big sport here — there was a great article on the internet some months back. I’ll see if I can find it. Not sure about the Chone… most of the rating is done near Banos and Tena…

The eastern side of the Andes is where you’ll find the best rafting. As Suzan mentioned, Tena and Banos are hotspots for whitewater rafting. And just so you know, even though Tena is on the edge of the Amazon, there are no crocs or piranhas anywhere nearby. People swim in the rivers all the time with no worries. 🙂
