Scuba diving and snorkeling are two sea-related activities that are very popular for those who live on or frequent the cayes of Belize, or the coastal towns that are close to the Mesoamerican Barrier reef.

If you visit Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, you can dive or snorkel at the protected underwater park, Hol Chan marine Reserve (www.holchanbelize.org). It’s a boat short ride from either caye. If you prefer to spend a leisurely day snorkeling, a great option is to take a catamaran trip up to Mexico Rocks, which is now an underwater park.

There are plenty of dive shops on Ambergris Caye that offer scuba diving excursions. Here are a few to consider:

    • Belize Pro Dive Center: tel. +501 226-2092; website: http://www.belizeprodivecenter.com
    • Amigos del Mar: tel. +501226-2706; website: http://www.amigosdivebelize.com
    • Chuck & Robbie’s; tel. +501 610-4424 and +501 602-7681; website: http://ambergriscayediving.com.

And here are two tour companies that specialize in snorkeling tours:

    • The Lady Leslie – snorkeling touris and sailing on a catamaran: tel. +501 226-2279; http://www.ladylesliebelize.com
    • Grumpy & Happy – snorkeling tours on a speedboat. Cater to people with special needs: tel. +501 226-3420 and toll free at (888) 273-9226; website: http://www.grumpyandhappy.com.

Has anyone ever been scuba diving or snorkeling in Belize? Le me know if you have any recommendations, or general tips, to contribute to the group.

    Hi Ann,

This is my first post since becoming a subscriber. I have had the pleasure of diving with Sea Star Belize. They are just north of the bridge on the right just past the Cloisters. In addition to being a fabulous dive operator, they have a delightful beach bar and restaurant on the water called the Dive Bar. Both operations have exceptional staff that go out of their way to make you feel like family. Here is a link, check them out. http://www.seastarbelize.com/

Thanks, Ron. There are many good dive operators on the island. I have not heard very much about Sea Star. So thanks for your feedback.
