And I’m not sure why you think receiving mail isn’t an issue–the postal service leaves a LOT to be desired. You can have items shipped through Club Correos but it’s my understanding it ain’t cheap.

No. In fact if you have translations done in the U.S. it’s more hassle for you. Here’s the scoop from the local immigration office: “Any document in a foreign language must be translated to Spanish and must have the recognition of the translator’s signature before a notary public. When the translation has been done in a foreign country, it must be apostilled or legalized by the Ecuadorian consulate in the country of origin.”

I’m mystified by everything you’ve written, Gretchen. I was just in Quito a week ago for the IL conference and paid my bill at the hotel with my US credit card without problem. I have two Ecuadorian debit cards (getting my 1st credit card this week) and they both have magnetic strips on the back just like my US ones.
