A couple of my friends teach at the universities but I have no idea of the process for getting on board. I believe a Master’s level education or higher is required. A variety of Internet speeds are available depending on your budget. You’d be best served by hiring a real estate agent to show you available properties since you’ll be here such a short time. Contact Maribel Crespo, owner of Ecuadorable Properties, at crespomaribel@hotmail.com. No idea what book your wife is reading, but dressing up for dinner is not expected. Too many gringos underdress, in my humble opinion, but at most a pair of slacks and a jacket would be perfectly acceptable.

Cuenca Real Estate doesn’t  do short-term rentals as far as I know. Juan’s place is right on Calle Larga overlooking the Tomebamba River in El Centro, a 5 minute walk from Parque Calderon.

    You are most welcome.

Laura, great news! My friend & business partner Juan Heredia luckily has one of his studio apartments available for the whole month of June. We stayed in one of them ourselves the first month we were in Cuenca. The location is ideal and everything is included except your food.

Even better news–it’s only $400/month. I recommend you email him ASAP:  juan@terradiversa.com. He’ll send you back an information packet with photos and details.

Laura, you’re gonna put up with barking dogs & car alarms pretty much anywhere you go in Cuenca. I’m not a fan of Hotel Otorongo. It’s not centrally located and the apartments are really spartan. I’ll check with a couple of friends and see if I can find something for you. Is it you & someone else coming?

Joel, that seems correct to me as well, but be mindful of your timing. The apostille is only valid for 6 months from the date it is applied to your doc. If you get it in April, don’t dally applying for residency when you arrive in August.

No worries. We have the same voltage as the States so no converters are needed.

Good for you, Mike. My wife and I are also long-timers, so perhaps I was “preaching to the choir.” All the best to you & your family.

Mike, pay very close attention to your wife’s objections. As we say in the South, “When momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” Gated communities and fancy restaurants are only the tip of the iceberg to a satisfying life abroad. I’ve already seen too many unfortunate endings when one member of a couple initially acquiesces to the other’s enthusiasm. It’s vitally important for both of you to be 100% in on expatriation.

There are an amazing number of single women happily living alone here in Cuenca all 12 months of the year. I can’t imagine what tourist publications are filled with such scary stories, but I have noticed that several of the Internet forums (certainly not this one!) seem to be overly populated with unhappy people eager to share their misery.

Alan, you must apply for the 180 day 12-X extension before the 90 days on your T-3 expires. This can be done at an Immigration Office up to the 89th day.

in reply to: Return To Ecuador #509166

The remainder of your T-3 visa can be used anytime until August 11 of this year.

If you’re a “newbie speaker,” so will everything else that comes out of your mouth! But at least you’ll be trying—-.

in reply to: Getting to the new airport #509136

    Recently posted in GringoTree:

As for public transportation, according to a story in the Quito daily newspaper, El Comercio, the company Aeroservicios will provide bus and van transportation between the new airport and the main terminal at the old airport. From the old airport, you’ll have to transfer to a taxi or city bus to get to central Quito.

The Aeroservicios 22-passenger buses will cost $8 each way and leave four times an hour during peak periods, twice an hour the rest of the time. Smaller Aeroservicios vans will also be available and cost $12.

In addition, upwards of 500 taxis will service the new airport. Leaving from the new airport, passengers will pay for their rides at set fares, determined by distance, at ticket counters. Traveling to the airport, the article says something to the effect that the use of meters will be mandatory 24 hours a day, with fares regulated by the Ministry of Transportation.

Five public bus operators will also service the new airport; these buses will travel along a dedicated right-hand lane on a regular schedule; the fare will be 68 cents.

A consortium of Quito hotels is currently negotiating with the authorities for private-transportation services to transfer hotel guests to and from the new airport.
