    Excellent point, Charles.

Yeah, but the value of precious metals fluctuates daily. So worth $10K according to who?

I can assure you there are house alarms in Ecuador because we hear them going off from our apartment. Since we live in a secured building I can’t speak to the speediness of security service responses, but I would imagine it wouldn’t be as fast as you would desire.

Yes, of course you can own precious metals here. This is a major gold-producing country. Bringing precious metals in is another matter. What you always have to understand in Ecuador is there are laws, but the person you are standing in front of gets to interpret those laws. Given that reality, bringing in anything beyond minimal amounts value-wise just isn’t worth the risk.

You can for sure purchase an elliptical machine. We’ve got plenty of music stores that will have keyboard instruments, but I have no idea if exactly what you are describing is available.

That’s an interesting question. You’re right, we’ve got abundant sunshine here, but we also have a lot of rain that provides hydroelectric power. I’m not aware that solar energy is being aggressively tapped into in Ecuador at this time.

Since the coastline is over 1200 miles long, I’d suggest breaking it up into segments. In the south you could stay in Salinas; middle, somewhere in or around Manta; for the north coast, Pedernales.

In three years I’ve never driven here, Gary, so I can’t help you with this one. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Is this a question or a comment?

That is a question a good attorney here can better answer after reviewing your records. Let me know if you need a referral.

Peggy, you’re not going to find what you’re looking for on the coast of Ecuador. The cultural activities you are listed are in the highlands. Guayaquil has shopping, restaurants, and golf, but it’s a big, busy city.  Keeping it real, Ecuador is not a never will be a cheap America. Goods and services you now take for granted are not available here. I politely suggest lowering your expectations.

Tuesday–Di Bacco. Friday–take your choice: California Kitchen, Fabiano’s, Cafe San Sebas. Lots of gringos at Inca Bar & Lounge on Sunday’s as well.

The weather here doesn’t vary significantly throughout the year. You should be fine in May. For sure contact me when you get here. Go to some Gringo Nights to meet lots of new expats.

I don’t have specific statistics about the two cities. I can only speculate that because worldwide there is more crime in larger cities, Quito would have more than Cuenca.
