In the major stores there are standards, and I know the queen – -which is what I have (Ecuadorian queen) is just slightly larger than a US queen. Some of the sheets I have bought for it in the US fit and some do not.

Here is the website for the biggest mattress distributor in Ecuador: http://www.chaideychaide.com/

It’s in Spanish and metrics but not hard to figure out. Go to the Products page and scroll down to specifications…

And just to add my input…we left from Nebraska. And that didn’t seem to matter in the years after our departure as our tax advisor said that if we weren’t living in any state, we needn’t pay income tax. But I know people who have established their mailing address in Texas for this very reason. Sometimes I think it depends on the tax advisor wanting you to cover all bases.

Good question. And it totally depends on your comfort level and where you decide to live. Doctors and hospitals in Quito, Guayaquil and even Cuenca will be better and cost more than in smaller towns. And it’s so hard to predict the future. If you’re healthy you won’t need health care. But if you come down with a serious illness, you’d have to decide where to go for treatment… But if you put, say $300 to $500 away each month for two years then you’d have a pretty good medical saving account that would go a long way towards any serious issue here. I’m having a very hard time answering this, as you may be able to tell.

The airport is not yet closer to Cotacachi, but it will be when the new road is completed. Yes, I have paid $55, too and as much as $80 when we had tons of luggage and pets and needed a large van.

It’ easy enough to get private insurance here — they all offer different programs and you need to be less than 65 when you initially apply. There are now a few that accept applicants up to age 70.

A day stop in Loja? Does that mean you are flying in and staying for only one day? I’ll email you with someone you can chat with in Loja. There aren’t many expats in Guayaquil but I know a few and we’ll see if they are amenable to chatting.

From Salinas to Manta and all the way north to Pedernales have all had some issues — but April 10 is still far away. If they don’t get any more rain, you’ll be fine. If they do, there could be more problems. Best to keep an eye on it and be flexible. Chances are you’ll be fine.

Here goes: There are a couple of options we’ve learned about for accommodation near the airport. While we wholeheartedly recommend spending time in Quito (you’ll find Quito hotel recommendations in the travel section of your Ecuador Insider website) we realize some of you may have early morning connecting flights to Cuenca, Manta, Loja, Galapagos, etc.

We are not endorsing these places as we have not stayed in any of them yet, but you can try:

http://www.rincondepuembo.com/ (This one looks as if it may be the closest to the airport.

We’ve also heard that a place called La Marmite may have some rooms — they have a well-known restaurant in Checa. You can email them for information at marmite@uio.satnet.net. And Airport Suites may or may not be open yet: http://airporthotelquito.com/

Hi Juanita, I asked an Ecuadorian attorney friend about this and he said he is not sure  but he thinks your cousin will not have a problem with her service dog. We both think your best bet is to contact the tour operator you are thinking of using and pose the question to them. They should have an answer for you.

Yes, domestic flights leave from the same airport. I will look up the info on hotels and re-post soon.

Gary, typically these are the States where you pay no state income tax. But for the most reliable info, contact Nick Hodges. He’s an expat tax advisor and can give you the best advice. Nick Hodges: nick@nchwealth.com

The Simon Bolivar school has programs of the type you are looking for, and in several locations: http://www.simon-bolivar.com/

I can’t think of any beach towns in Ecuador that have golf courses. (We’ve heard rumors that some are proposed but as far as I know right now, that’s all they are — rumors.) The closest beach to a golf course at this point is probably Playas, about an hour from Guayaquil – -where I think there are two courses. And Salinas, which is about two hours to Guayaquil.

Good point, Edd. You sound like a very nice husband.

Yes, all domestic flights are now arriving and departing the new airport.
