You don’t say who you are renting from, but it is highly unlikely you can pay with a credit or debit card. You’ll need cash for that. That’s why we switched to Capital One — no foreign transaction fees, making our ATM withdrawals basically free. We also pay our utility bills with cash. The only thing direct debited from our credit card is DirecTV and we’ll probably get rid of that as we rarely watch it. Too much programming available via the internet these days….

Christine, my research shows the highest-paying jobs for teaching English are in Asia (specifically Japan, South Korea, and China) and in the Middle East…Dubai.
Hi James, it’s best to find them once you are in Cotacachi — very hard to find them in advance. But, you can email Jack Moss and tell him what you are looking for. He sends out a daily email in Cotacachi, so ask to be put on his list, too. He often sends out messages about rentals. Intheandes@gmail.com.
I’d suggest you rent a place temporarily for a month or two while you scour the town for your perfect place.
Yes, I have two cats and I can get cat litter here. You have to buy it when you see it though as it’s not the most common product. But our two local stores in Cotacachi now carry it as well as the local vet. You can get it many places in Quito and I’ve also bought it in Otavalo but it took some looking.
I’m not old enough to qualify for the senior discounts yet, but I have many friends here who get discounts on public transportation (with is sort of ridiculous as it’s so cheap) and they get the IVA (sales tax) they pay returned to them every month. I think there is a cap on that of about $250 or so…
We also work with a CPA firm in the States. If you’re asking if you could offer this service to fellow expats, I ‘d say yes. But you gotta know the expat laws as pertain to personal situations inside and out…
I’ll let Edd answer this since he lives in Cuenca. Your best bet to find a job teaching English will be at a local university or private school. So you might want to do a Google search for those (there are far more of them in Quito) and contact them each individually. Be aware that if you do find a job, the pay will be very, very low. Perhaps $500 a month for a full-time gig…

They are able to call it an “international airport” because it is large enough to welcome small jets — but the only truly international flights would be small planes or charters coming from Colombia, Peru, Panama, etc.
Fruit and fruit juice, a roll or bread of some kind, maybe some eggs, coffee or tea or hot chocolate.
Mark, metric is “standard” in most of the world. My husband says if you have metric tools, that’s probably better. Isn’t there some ‘universal’ tool that will work?

Carol, yes you should be able to take your meds into a pharmacy and see what costs here will be. You probably will not be able to get the exact same prescriptions, so you’ll have to do some research and that may require a visit to a doctor. Alexandria, you will need a resident visa to obtain local health insurance. Some expats in Cotacachi have a box at the post office, but most also do most transactions, etc. online, as Edd said. We’ve been living overseas for 12 years now and we do not see a need for snail mail. You’ll be surprised how you will simplify your life when you move overseas. And no more junk mail!
Not knowing if the new airport will open on schedule or not will make it difficult for you to make lodging plans very far in advance. I suggest you wait until you arrive in Quito and see what the schedule is for the opening of the airport. I don’t know yet of any hotels near the new airport, but we’ll see what we can find out.
