Hi Gerald, I am not certain where to go to get the “best deal,” but you can try Giselle’s for electronics. Family owned and nice people willing to extend nice discounts. They are on the same street as Slyvia’s Farmacia San Francisco.
There is a furniture store on the southwest corner of 10 de Agosto (Leather Street) and the street that runs in front of the mercado. Go in there and see what they have. The houseware stores on that corner are places to by plates, plastics, etc.
We bought our blankets (wool and VERY nice) at a specialty store in Otavalo that is no longer there. You’ll find good-quality sheets at Todo Hogar in Ibarra (in the same complex as SuperMaxi) and you may find some other things you need at Kywi hardware store (smaller Home Depot) in that same complex. You may also want to price TVs and DVD player at Todo Hogar.
And maybe try Finn McCool’s Bar…
Also, there used to be an ‘older’ men’s expat group that used to meet for coffee at a hotel on Amazonas — in fact, I think it is the Hotel Rio Amazonas at the corner of Cordero St. and Ave. Amazonas. Again, I have no idea if this is still the case but may be worth a look.

A properly prepared will in Ecuador can be accepted in the U.S. However you should know, that, the real estate goes to surviving children and not to a spouse. I am uncertain about death certificates. No, you needn’t show any proof. The only time it’s an issue is if you travel from Ecuador or Colombia to Costa Rica. That government requires proof of yellow fever vaccination. THE CDC has a spectrum of vaccinations it suggests for travel anywhere in the tropics — your choice whether you get them or not. We did Hep A/B long ago. Malaria is no longer an issue in Ecuador, by the way. Dengue can be a problem in coastal issues (as it is everywhere in the tropics), so as you say, if you go to the coast, use repellant, screens on the windows, etc. And maybe it happens, but I’ve never heard of anyone coming down with yellow fever…
Several people who have attended IL conferences have done this — don’t know if they are Ecuador Insider members. But Sarah and Jonathan and their team seem to always get rave reviews. I think you are in good hands!
I switched to a Capital One account since they don’t charge foreign ATM fees. I am uncertain what you mean about “interest” on the amount you withdraw via ATM??? And I can always withdraw $300 to $500 from ATMs, no problem, anywhere in the world. With my credit card, I have been able to get $1,000 in cash at the bank I mentioned earlier. I am sure I could have gotten more, but that’s all I needed. I pay off my credit cards every month so I don’t believe I incurred any interest there either.
HI Oral, of course you count. But banking overall is somewhat personal, so for IL to give advice that fits every situation just isn’t doable. One thing you might consider is that there are some banks in Ecuador where you can go in and make a cash withdrawal using your credit card. I’ve done this and it’s very simple. (In fact, I’ve done it in more countries than just Ecuador.) If I remember correctly, once place you can do it is at Banco Internacional — and I think the branch we used was at Quicentro Mall in Quito. You might try that.
I think it depends where in Quito you are going…. but $25 to $35 should get you just about anywhere. And there are taxi kiosks at the airport which charge the going rate.
