In May 2013 we had to go to the nearest Ecuadorian Consulate to get my wife’s Social Security
statement stamped as proof of income.

    Jean,

I think you will find that a lot of the hotels have a safe in each room.  If in doubt, email the hotel and ask.  In the places that we have stayed, the safe is large enough to hold 2 laptops.

    Charles,

My wife is currently going through the same process here in Tennessee.  She is working with the US State Department.  The State Dept returned her request because they said that her POI was not embossed!  She sent an email to a “specialist” in customer service (202-663-1848) stating that SS only uses an ink stamp for verification.  She is awaiting the reply.

    Thomas,

Yes. They use American dollars and will accept American coins but they do mint their own coins.
No. They don’t print their own.

    Edward,

Keep an eye out on the International Living website. When we signed up for the conference in Ecuador last August, IL had listed several tours that were available before and after the conference.

http://www.ecuadorexpatjourneys.com is one of the companys that ran tours at the last conference.

Research the “Humboldt Current” to answer your question about the temperature of the water and how arid the coast will be.
My wife and I did the “North Coast Real Estate” tour from Manta to just north of Jama in August and it was greener and more humid the farther north we went.

If it is within your budget(time & money), I would strongly recommend that you take one or more of the tours that are offered by the vendors at the conference if you are seriously considering moving to Ecuador. My wife and I found them to be a perfect complement to the conference.
