Thanks Greg. Maybe others have more detailed knowledge of the area. As for travel, in talking with my travel companions the consensus was to rent, even if we stick to one location for several days and don’t use it.

We will be renting either in the Playa Flamingo area and dropping of in San Jose. OR San Jose to pick up and return. Can you recommend WHERE to rent from? I hear Alamo is a good choice. We don’t need to pickup or dropoff at the airport itself, so would off-site be cheaper (no airport taxes)?

    Thanks. j2

Aha. Thanks Jason. Somehow that 7-11% tidbit of information got lost somewhere. As for using the system, well, as a US federal employee I have pretty good coverage I carry into retirement – a very big benefit. However, if I ever drop that insurance in retirement I can never get back in again. That makes such decisions more complex when it comes to any overseas moves, anywhere, as it is just a major added expense for something I may never use. Odd, but I have yet to find any federal retiree expats with whom I can discuss it. Know any? 🙂
    Thanks. Joel

Thanks Jason. I was rather expecting that response, especially that there are already skilled craftsmen available. It was worth asking though. Maybe I could convince his wife they need to run a B and B… 🙂
Have a happy New Year. Joel

as a PS… ok, I could have looked at the “doing business” section of this site, but didn’t until now. However while I read “you can own a business but you cannot work in that business. Your responsibilities must be limited to management of the business.” I see later a list of business opportunities that seem very much like a one person operation without necessarily any employees. So I guess I am still a tad confused, but less so. I guess the question still stands but modified to say “How would one go about setting up a handyman business in CR? Would it be worthwhile to even investigate?”
    thanks again. j
