I am interested in golf course developments on the Pacific Coast. The two I am aware of are Montecristi which is about eight miles from Manta and another course (not sure if this one was constructed) called Cosa Jama Beach and Golf Resort. Can you tell me anything about these two?

Also there was a tourist guide and information source in Manta whose first name was Al. He had an extensive website but I forgot the name or address of the website. Have you heard of this guy and if so can you direct me to his website or give me any means of communicating with him?

    Thank you.

Thanks for the info but when I went to the facebook page you had to join to be able to post and that only Cotacachi residents could join.

I am wondering if someone could post the topic for me asking for the names and contact information about English speaking taxi drivers who will work on an hourly basis and if so, what was their hourly charge?

    Thanks.

Thanks for the information A couple of questions. 1. Would you recommend La Cuadra as opposed to La Mirage and second, will it be easy to get taxis in Cotacachi to rent by the hour for excursions?

    Thank yoiu.

Thought of another question. Can you rent a car in Cotacachi? Can you get a GPS which operates in English? How expensive is it? Is it easy to find your way around that area of Ecuador as I am geographically challenged?

    Thank you.

Thanks for the info. Do you know where you can get a road map for Ecuador?

    Thanks again.

Stephen, I think that you have little to worry about social security going broke. The politicians all know that if social security goes broke they will all be looking for a job. If you buy a home from your savings, leave a decent nest egg from those savings to take care of any emergencies. If your home is paid for, then the $2,600 per month is social security and pension should be enough for you to live on comfortably in Ecuador. Also, you might want to avoid having your savings in an Ecuadorian bank. I believe they have had problems in the past and it would be safer to have your fvunds in an FDIC insured account in the United States.

Terry, the others know much more than me about this but I am wondering if the best bet would be to take a taxi to the Quito airport and fly to Manta at which time you could rent a car and go south or north to a multitude of beach cities.

I had an abbrievated visit to Ecuador four years ago. Abbrievated because I came down with an intestinal problem and after 2 1/2 weeks decided to go home.
We rented a condo in Salinas for what was suppose to be five weeks. Salinas was nice as we were one block from the ocean and had an unbelievably nice condo with a clear view to the ocean. We walked the boardwalk (malecon), spent time on the beach etc.
We got a ride to the airport in Guayaquil and flew to Vilcabamba which was cool. Picture a small town with dirt roads and an occasional person on horseback who would tie their horse up to a post like they did in the Old West. Worth a visit but not for more than two days.
I would highly recommend you go visit Otavalo and Cotaccachi which is about 1 1/2 hours by car north of the new Quito airport. We had planned on flying there until I got sick.

The other thing we did not get to do was to fly to Cuenca which I am sure you will do. The other thing to do would be to fly to Manta and rent a car and drive up and down the coast to see the ocean villages. There is quite a bit of new condo developments along the coast and I would think this would be a worthwhile thing to do. As a matter of fact I intend to get back to Ecuador to do the things I mentioned to you that I did not get to do. Just be careful to not eat at some of the little hole in the wall restaurants on the ocean because I think that is where I picked up the intestinal problem.

Any thoughts on obtaining a comprehensive Cuenca street map?

    Susan,

Thanks for the tip but I live in Florida and I think it would be rather difficult to pull that off.

I loved my three week visit to Ecuador a few years ago (had to cut it short because of intestinal problems from eating in a wrong restaurant) and am planning on returning to see the places I missed such as Cuenca, Cotacaci, Otavalo and the middle to northern Pacific Coast).  One thing concerns me is that we have seen over the past couple of years, glowing articles from people such as Ron and Teressa Moore, Steven Watkins etc. but now they are selling and apparently leaving.  Is there something about Ecuador that wears off after a couple of years?

My guess is that a condo would be easier from a property management situation whereby a property manager could take care of your property and take care of the rentals.

    Laura,

You might want to try cuencarealestate.com.   They have an extensive listing of living quarters for rent or purchase.
