A Light Down the Medicare Tunnel?
“You can’t use Medicare abroad.” Your far-flung International Living writers get asked about Medicare all the time. And this has traditionally been our chagrined response.
(Our expert lists exceptions here.)
The latest news out of Panama addresses this constant question: Are my US-based benefits any good to me overseas?
First, the news—Panama’s high-tech Johns Hopkins International affiliate, the Pacífica Salud hospital group, has just announced that it can now directly bill your US Medicare Advantage plan if you have a medical emergency in Panama City.
The key word is emergencies—as in urgent care only—and you should verify with your specific Medicare Advantage plan provider that you do indeed have international emergency coverage prior to travel. (And don’t forget to keep your Medicare Advantage card on you.)
We’re also getting word that prominent hospitals in Panama’s popular Chiriquí region will be working with US programs like Tricare, Medicare Advantage, and even some other US insurances.
All the hospitals mentioned here ask that you pre-register to avoid delays.
Will things change again in the future? In a world of constantly shifting landscapes perhaps nothing is forever. But this I know to be constant and true: it pays to do your research ahead of travel or a move… and continue to stay informed while abroad.
It also pays to plan your Medicare strategy carefully.
