One of These Hidden Places Could Be Your Next Home
“Oooh America,” said the 20-something Irish barista. “It’s my dream to move there and become a cheerleader. To run out on a field doin’ flips and stuff one day… so excitin,’ ya get me?”
“Wait—there aren’t any cheerleaders in Ireland?” I asked.
“No… We don’t have any of that here,” She sighed. “As soon as I can, I’m movin’ to California.”
It’s exchanges like this that make an international life so addictive… One of the myriad moments of perspective that remind you how much there is to learn about our fellow humans, our world.
This month, we’re so excited to bring you Costa Rica’s Next Great Expat Escape. When Executive Editor Jen Stevens read the draft, she practically jumped out of her chair. This is EXACTLY what we’re looking for!
Over the past few months, our scouts have taken to the road like never before. Their mission? To turn over every stone and uncover “hidden places” for long-term living—places that are accessible, beautiful, culturally rich… and absurdly affordable because the masses have yet to arrive.
It’s an initiative we’re supporting across all of our channels—in Daily Postcards, Jen’s weekly Digest, our website, Community pages, YouTube, and of course, in IL Magazine. If you’re actively looking for an overseas home, keep your eyes peeled for the Hidden Places logo… and a new discovery.
I hate to brag, but our feature story is far from the only gem you’ll find in this issue…
I got lost in Leena Horner’s travels through her Greek sanctuary, Zagori, which “feels like a secret kept by the earth.”
If you’re planning a family (or couples) trip to Mexico, take in Kirsten Raccuia’s “otherworldly” trip to Bacalar Lagoon, a zen-inducing destination with loads to do… and taste.
Speaking of Mexico, there’s been a lot of confusion out there about its visa policies. IL expert Ted Baumann dispels the myths, and lays out two clear pathways to residency.
Much farther afield, Bart Walters explains how a move to Thailand dropped 50 pounds and six inches from his waist—easily.

P.S. There ARE cheerleaders in Costa Rica…
