What Are My Phone Options in Ecuador?

Quentin P. Says:

How can I get set up with a phone if I move to Ecuador?

IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:

Hi Quentin,

Most expats in Ecuador rely on cellphones, either using monthly plans or by putting credit onto the phone as needed. The actual phones may cost a little more than what you would pay in North America (and iPhones can be almost twice as expensive), but mobile data and call rates are excellent value.

There are two major providers, Movistar and Claro, as well as some start-ups such as Tuenti. Monthly plans can be as low as $12 per month and will typically include a certain number of free calling minutes, a lot of mobile data (perhaps 8GB or more), and hundreds of text messages. Putting credit on your phone as needed is also a very cheap option and you can top up at hundreds of small shops in any town in Ecuador.

Landlines are available in most areas, and service is also inexpensive. For calling outside Ecuador, VoIP services are the way to go. Skype and WhatsApp are the most popular services among expats.

Another popular phone option is MagicJack, which is a small device that plugs into your computer’s USB port. You simply plug a standard telephone into the jack and you’re in business. The one-time cost to buy MagicJack is currently $49.99 (plus taxes and fees), and for that you get one year of free calls.

All of your calls to the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are free. If you choose to place international calls to countries other than those locations, you have the option to purchase low-priced prepaid calling minutes.

Remember, you can learn much more about life as an expat in Ecuador in our comprehensive guidebook, Escape to Ecuador.
