What Are My Visa Options for Greece?

Alan F. Says:

I have always loved Greek history and culture. What are my options to get a residency visa in Greece?

IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:

Hi Alan,

Greece is a beautiful European country with a rich history and a welcoming culture. In fact, we just added it to our Annual Global Retirement Index this year, where it scored high in the categories of Cost of Living, Healthcare, and Visa/Benefits. You can see our full 2023 Annual Global Retirement Index here.

As for your visa options in Greece, one popular option is the Golden Visa program. This program grants residency to non-EU citizens who invest a certain amount of money in Greek real estate. The investment threshold for the Golden Visa program is currently €250,000 ($272,665 at current exchange rates) for properties that are more than 30 years old or located in certain areas designated as “architecturally or historically significant.” Alternatively, if you invest in new properties or in areas not considered “architecturally or historically significant” the minimum threshold is €300,000 ($327,198).

The Golden Visa program has proven to be a popular choice among American citizens looking to invest in the Greek property market while also obtaining residency. With the Golden Visa, you can live and travel freely within the European Union and enjoy all the benefits of living in an EU member state. The visa is valid for five years and can be renewed indefinitely, as long as the investment is maintained.

Additionally, there is a self-employment visa which allows you to start your own business in Greece. This option requires an initial investment of €17,000 ($18,541) and have a business plan that is approved by the Greek government.

It’s worth noting that regardless of the visa you choose, it is always best to consult with a lawyer or legal professional to ensure that you have all the necessary documentation and that you are aware of all the requirements for obtaining residency in Greece.
